Yellow shirt: Jonathan (8 years old)
Topless: Benjamin (7 years old)

“Hey! Stop playing with my toy!” And, Jonathan snatches the toy from Benjamin hands.
“Alright! Alright! Fine! I’ll just play with the sand! I will tell papa! He will scold you!” Benjamin pouts and starts playing with the sand.

Jonathan and Benjamin are brothers whose age differs by 1 year. Father is a construction site worker and mother has run away from home when Benjamin is 2 years old. So, father is the breadwinner of the family. They are poor. The poor father has to work very hard to provide them for school. Especially for Benjamin. He just started on Primary One and one more expense is pilling up! School fees, bus fees and miscellaneous fees. Where can he get all those money just from working in the construction site?

They live in a rented one room flat. Besides the school fees, father also has to pay for the house rents. It is a heavy burden for father, but, he still works very hard to be a good father. He teaches Jonathan and Benjamin to have good morals and never to steal things. Even if they are poor, they shouldn’t do anything which is against their morals. Father care a lot about their morals and will try his best to bring them up to be a poor but morally upright citizens.

Everyday after school, Jonathan and Benjamin would go to the construction site to wait for his father. Although this might not be a suitable place to go, but, father can’t possibly leave them alone at home right? That’s even more dangerous. And, father doesn’t have extra money to put them in a child care center too. So, after begging with his boss, he finally allow Jonathan and Benjamin to stay at the construction site where it is quite empty.

So, everyday, the only ‘toy’ they can play with are sands. But today, Jonathan take out a motocycle toy from his bag and starts playing with it. Benjamin is baffle. How come Jonathan has a toy? Could it be father being bias and only buys a toy for Jonathan? So, Benjamin decided to ask his brother…

“Bro, how come you’ve got a toy?” Benjamin wonder.
“Hey, don’t be a busybody! It’s none of your business!” Jonathan trying to avoid the question.

“Is it papa buy for you?”, Benjamin continues, “Let me play for a while!”
“No! And, you better not let papa knows about this! Otherwise I will punch you!” Jonathan raise his voice and trying to threaten Benjamin.

“Why?” Benjamin ask inquiringly.
“Oh! Don’t tell me you stole it?!” Benjamin added.
“SHUT UP! You better not tell papa about this!” Jonathan is getting impatient.

At this time, Benjamin snatches the toy from Jonathan and take a look at it.

“Hey! Stop playing with my toy!” And, Jonathan snatches the toy from Benjamin hands.
“Alright! Alright! Fine! I’ll just play with the sand! I will tell papa! He will scold you!” Benjamin pouts and starts playing with the sand.
“What?!” And Jonathan pushes Benjamin to the ground.

Just when he is going to punch Benjamin, father shouted, “John! I heard everything!”
“How could you do such a thing? What have I taught you? Didn’t I say, even if we are poor, we must also have backbone! We shouldn’t do such things which will degrade our morals!” Father speaks angrily.

“No, pa! I didn’t stole the toy! I really didn’t!” Jonathan rebuts.
“Don’t lie! If not, how you get the toy?” Father said.

Slience. Jonathan did not say anything.

“Must be bro stole the toy lah!” Benjamin broke the silence.

“Shut up! I said I did not steal!!!” Jonathan shouted.

And, father gave Jonathan a slap on his face. Benjamin was startled. This is the first time they sees father so angry.

“I said I did not steal the toy! I picked it up from the ground!” Jonathan shouted with a shivering voice and run away.

Father feels upset for slapping Jonathan and Benjamin feels bad for adding fuel to the flames just now. Then, the two of them went after Jonathan who is running.

Jonathan runs to the center of the construction site where there are many heavy and dangerous things around.

“John! Come back! Stop running! It’s dangerous over there!” Father shouts.
“Bro! I’m sorry! Stop running!” Benjamin shouts too.

When father is about to catch up with Jonathan, he saw something on the edge of the building. It seems like a metal rod. It is falling and it was just above Jonathan! Father quickly runs towards Jonathan and grab him! Then, the metal rod fell. Jonathan is save, but, where’s Benjamin? He is still running, because, he couldn’t run as fast as father. Just when the metal rod is falling, Benjamin run to that spot and he was hit on the head. Blood flows like tap water and everyone is appall by the scene.

Father and Jonathan runs towards Benjamin who has already lost concious.

“Bro! Bro! Wake up! Bro!” Jonathan screams.
“Ben! Ben! Are you ok?” Father carry Benjamin in his arms and shouted.

All the construction workers crowded around the scene as if they are watching a free show.

“Call the ambulance! Quick call the ambulance!” Father shouted.

Ambulance came within minutes and announce the death of Benjamin. Father is heartbeaking and Jonathan couldn’t accept the fact that his brother died just like that.

A happy family is broken up just because of a misunderstanding…

This story is about a tragic misunderstanding but it doesn’t follow the conventions of greek tragedy. There is no realization, fatal flaw, etc. Would’ve been a tragedy if Jonathan had actually bought the toy with his savings for Benjamin and then they quarrel before Jonathan has a chance to explain and Jonathan gets hurt.
